Oh, My Aching Back, or Why I’m Taking the #PainFreePledge

I write a lot about running and fitness, but one thing I haven’t mentioned is pain. Specifically, back pain. I’ve had a lousy lower back ever since I decided, one night my freshman year in college, to rearrange all the furniture in my dorm room. During my second pregnancy, it was so bad that I had to see a chiropractor – and still do.

Last month was National Pain Awareness Month, which I totally didn’t know. But then I learned about the #PainFreePledge, sponsored by BackJoy, which makes these cool SitSmartPosture devices that help position you properly in your chair.

It’s not just people with chronic medical conditions, like scoliosis, that suffer from back pain. If you’re lifting heavy stuff with your knees, hunching over your computer, or even sleeping on your stomach, you’re at risk. I know that hex bar squats will wreak havoc on my spine, for example.

Here’s what I found really shocking: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, chronic pain affects more people than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined! Back pain alone will impact 8 out of 10 of us at one point or another.

So, if you want to win some goodies to help with your back pain, take the #PainFreePledge:

  1. Head on over to BackJoy’s #PainFreePledge Facebook page.
  2. Pick an action. I was surprised to learn that wearing skinny jeans and crossing your legs could contribute to back pain.
  3. Fill out the entry form.
It’s that simple, really. Anyone who takes the #PainFreePledge will automatically be entered to win BackJoy’s Grand Prize bundle full of products that will help to provide a natural, pain-free life.

Additionally, BackJoy will be giving out daily giveaway prizes to a few lucky winners who post/tweet about their #PainFreePledge on social media in that given day.
I really like the tips: keeping a pain journal, doing stretches (the action I chose), and eating anti-inflammatory foods. Really, give it a shot if your spine is unhappy!
