Gearing Up for the 2016 CrossFit Games Open: 16.1

Last night, at 5 p.m. PT, the first WOD for the 2016 CrossFit Games Open was announced (16.1), and it was a doozy:

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 20 minutes of:
25-ft. overhead walking lunge
8 burpees
25-ft. overhead walking lunge
8 chest-to-bar pull-ups

Men lunge 95 lb.
Women lunge 65 lb.

That’s the RX version – the one that athletes like Christmas Abbott do. Fortunately, Dave Castro, the director of the Games, was kind enough to include a scaled version for athletes like me (although it is still sadistic):

Complete as many rounds and reps as possible in 20 minutes of:
25-ft. front rack walking lunge
8 burpees
25-ft. front rack walking lunge
8 jumping chin-over-bar pull-ups

Men lunge 45 lb.
Women lunge 35 lb.

My first reaction to the WOD was, oh, crap. I was at yoga (at the box!) during the announcement, and one of the guys had the announcement streaming on his phone, so he turned to me during a Lizard pose to tell me what the RX workout was. I wanted to slither into the floor. What did I sign up for?! Then he turned to me during a twist to tell me about the scaled version. After Savasana, I looked it up for myself and was like, ok, I’ve got this. The Veterinarian was one mat over, so we planned to do it together this weekend, fist-bumped, and started strategizing.

Obviously, 20 minutes is like 10 more minutes than it needs to be. That’s a long time to do lunges, burpees, and pullups. In CrossFit time, that’s closer to a half marathon than a 5K. It’s going to be a serious test of strength and will, and it’s probably going to leave me sore and very tired.2016 CrossFit Games Open

But. I didn’t sign up for the 2016 CrossFit Games Opento wimp out. I signed up for the Open to see what I am capable of. I wanted to push myself a little harder than I do in class. This workout is definitely going to test my limits. I keep reminding myself that if I could do the Girls Just Wanna Have FUN-damentals competition, I can do this.

I can, and I will.
