How to Have a Healthy Halloween

Finally, it feels like October! We had a nice, crisp (for Houston!) morning, and I loved running in it. I enjoyed looking at all my neighbors’ Halloween decorations, and I can’t wait to trick-or-treat with my kids.

But having a healthy Halloween can be a challenge. I like to sneak some of my kids’ fun size bars (shh!), and that can send my sugar intake above what’s comfortable. Eating too much sugar can cause fatigue – and over time, diabetes and heart disease. Because I want those mini Twix bars, I try to balance out the rest of my day.

For me, that means keeping an eye out for hidden sugars in everyday foods so I don’t go (too far) over 25 grams of added sugar a day. For example, I was shocked when I discovered there were two grams of sugar in my usual corn tortillas! It’s everywhere, seriously – check out this infographic, because it’s almost terrifying.

Hidden sugar is everywhere - in your oatmeal, your salad dressing, and your soup!

One way I stay on track and avoid hidden sugars is with meal prep. When I cook for myself, I know what’s going into my food and can have a healthy Halloween, even with the treats I’ll sneak from the kids. Services like PlateJoy are invaluable – you specify what you like and don’t, how many meals you need, and what meals you need. You get recipes and grocery lists to make this more efficient – and so you can get the freshest ingredients possible from your grocery store of choice.

You can tell I’m a big fan of PlateJoy for meal planning – they have plans for Clean Eating and Paleo, as well as vegan and vegetarian plans. They also partner with InstaCart, which makes meal planning and prepping even easier.

InstaCart is a grocery delivery service that offers same-day delivery in over 200 cities. They have thousands of products you already love at stores you already shop at. 1. Sugar is in everything, it is infuriating! Label reading is the best thing you can do and become familiar with all the names sugar has.High Fructose Corn Syrup, as you probably already know, is brutal!

    Great piece!
