I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the crunchiest gal around. I try to eat healthy, though, and sometimes hitting protein macros are tough. But hemp hearts, you say, and I immediately am skeptical.
There’s no reason to be skeptical! First of all, hemp is not the same as marijuana. (There. I had to say it.) Hemp contains 0.001% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and will NOT cause a psychoactive effect nor a false positive drug test. So they’re perfectly safe to eat. The fine folks at Manitoba Harvest sent me some natural hemp hearts to try, and I put them to the test in an overnight oat recipe.
Overnight oats are a wonderful thing. They are the ultimate “set and forget” food, and they’re ready to eat as you impatiently wait for the hot coffee to brew. (Side note: the trivet behind the hemp hearts says “Given enough coffee, I could rule the world.” So there might be an obsession over here.)
Here’s what I used for one serving:
1/4 cup quick oats
1/3 cup nonfat yogurt
1 tsp honey
1 tbsp Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts
1/8 cup vanilla almond milk
I mixed it all in that glass Pyrex container, which doubles as a bowl, put the lid on, and left it in the fridge overnight. The next morning, I was happily eating my overnight oats.
The hemp hearts added a nice touch to it. Normally I’d use flax seeds or chia seeds. The hemp hearts tasted a little like pine nuts, which I liked. I also like that they’re full of protein and Omega 3s and so easy to just sprinkle on anything. Manitoba Harvest actually has a whole bunch of recipes that I can’t wait to try with the bag I received.
